Best field service software for small contractors (2026)

The same three tools win most small-contractor shortlists. We ran all five through a week of quotes, dispatch, invoicing and getting paid, and ranked them by the thing that actually decides it: how many trucks you run.

Most of a dispatcher's day happens in the schedule view. We score how many taps it takes to move a job and whether the tech in the truck sees the change.

How this page is funded: some links here are affiliate links — if you start a trial or subscribe through them, the vendor pays us a referral fee. It costs you nothing extra. QuoteIQ is our featured partner: if you sign up through our links we earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. QuoteIQ is featured as our top pick and is also our featured affiliate partner; the rest of the order comes from our review, not payouts. Full disclosure.

The verdict

Most small shops should start with QuoteIQ. Its AI estimating drafts quotes from a description or photos, the plans are flat and published from $29.99/mo for one user, and every plan comes with a 14-day free trial. Choose Jobber if you want the cleanest customer-facing side and published pricing up to 15 techs: it's live the same day with no sales call. Choose Housecall Pro if homeowners book you online and you want reviews and financing built in. Choose Workiz if your business runs on inbound phone calls.

Our top pick: QuoteIQ

1. QuoteIQOur pick

Buy it if: you run a small shop of 1–10 people, want quotes out faster and want a flat published price you can start on today.

QuoteIQ puts quoting, scheduling, invoicing, payments and customer texting in one app, and it is where we'd start most small shops. The headline feature is the AI Estimator: describe the job or upload photos, answer its follow-up questions, and it drafts line items and pricing for you to review. We've used QuoteIQ, and the draft is a starting point, not a finished quote: QuoteIQ itself warns the AI doesn't know site conditions you haven't given it, so check quantities and local costs before you send.

Pricing is flat and published: Essentials is $29.99/mo for one user, Pro is $199.99/mo for four, and extra users are $25/user/mo on any plan (see QuoteIQ’s pricing page). Every plan has a 14-day free trial, and you need a card to start it. The shared calendar handles one-off and recurring visits, with drag-to-reschedule and double-booking warnings.

Where it falls short: a lot sits behind the higher tiers. QuickBooks sync, job costing and in-app calling need Pro; online booking, route optimization and inventory need Elite at $299.99/mo. It syncs with QuickBooks Online only, and AI and texting draw on monthly IQ Credits that can cost extra. Our full QuoteIQ review and QuoteIQ vs Jobber cover the rest.

What we liked
  • AI Estimator drafts quotes from photos or a description
  • Flat, published plans from $29.99/mo
  • 14-day free trial on every plan
What we didn't
  • Booking, routing and inventory need Elite ($299.99/mo)
  • QuickBooks Online only, and only from Pro up
  • No payroll; GPS tracks the phone, not the truck

How to choose in 30 seconds

By trade

The tool that fits also depends on your trade. We break each one down with trade-specific notes here:

How to choose by crew size

Trade matters less than truck count.

Solo operator

QuoteIQ Essentials at $29.99/mo is the lowest published single-user price on this page and covers estimates, invoices, scheduling and online payments. Jobber from $49/mo is the alternative if the customer-facing side matters most, and you can be live the same day. Housecall Pro from $79/mo is the better fit if most of your work arrives as homeowners booking online. Before you pay for anything, read what a one-truck shop actually needs and what you can run for free.

2–5 trucks

This is where a real dispatch board and the "on my way" text start earning their keep. QuoteIQ Pro at $199.99/mo covers four users and adds "On The Way" texts, QuickBooks Online sync and job costing; a fifth user is $25/mo. Jobber and Housecall Pro are both still self-serve at this size too; the split is covered in Jobber vs Housecall Pro. If inbound calls are the business, Workiz belongs on the shortlist, but you will sit through a sales call to get a price.

6–15 trucks

QuoteIQ Elite at $299.99/mo covers ten users and adds online booking, route optimization and inventory; Max is $699.99/mo for 20. Jobber publishes pricing up to 15 techs and is the steadier fit if you want one plan to grow into. Housecall Pro moves to per-user pricing after 8, which it does publish. FieldPulse fits quote-heavy shops in the 3–20 range if you can live with an onboarding call. Our Jobber vs Workiz head-to-head is the one to read at this size.

15+ trucks

ServiceTitan is built for this, and only this. Setup takes weeks and assumes office staff. QuoteIQ says itself that it lacks a large-team dispatch board for 20-plus techs. If you are weighing ServiceTitan against staying on a self-serve tool, start with Housecall Pro vs ServiceTitan.

What it costs in year one

Using only the published entry prices on this page: QuoteIQ Essentials at $29.99/mo works out to $359.88 for a first year for one user, and QuoteIQ Pro at $199.99/mo to $2,399.88 for four users. Jobber's $49/mo works out to $588 for a first year on the single-user plan, and Housecall Pro's $79/mo works out to $948. Those are floors, not totals. QuoteIQ's AI and texting draw on monthly IQ Credits that can cost extra, call tracking is an add-on on Jobber and Housecall Pro, and multi-user plans cost more; the trade pages below list every published tier. Workiz, FieldPulse and ServiceTitan are quote only, so budget for a sales call before you can budget for software. The full picture, including the fees that never appear on a pricing page, is in what field service software really costs.

Features that matter for small contractors

Published pricing and same-day setup

Three of the six tools here (QuoteIQ, Jobber and Housecall Pro) show a price and let you sign up yourself. The other three want a sales call first. For a small shop that is a feature in itself: you can try the tool this weekend and know what it costs before you commit.

Online booking

If homeowners find you on Google, a booking link that lands jobs on your calendar without a phone call is the difference between winning the job and losing it to whoever answered. Housecall Pro's booking syncs to Google; Jobber and Workiz offer it too, and QuoteIQ's InstaSchedule self-booking comes with the Elite plan.

Call tracking

Only useful if you spend on ads. Workiz builds it in as a paid tier; Jobber and Housecall Pro sell it as an add-on. If you do not run paid ads, do not pay for it.

What the customer sees

Quote approval on their phone, an "on my way" text, a clean invoice and a review request afterwards. The customer-facing side is where Jobber pulls ahead of the pack.

How we ranked these

We ran the same week of work through every tool: a dozen quotes, nine jobs, a few reschedules, eleven invoices and two chargebacks. We scored setup time, how many taps it takes a tech to close a job from the truck, what the homeowner sees, and whether the vendor will tell you the price without a sales call. QuoteIQ was added after that test week as our featured partner and a tool we've used ourselves; its card is based on our use and QuoteIQ's own published pages. We re-check pricing monthly and date it on the page. Here's how we stay honest about the money.

Field service software questions

What is the best field service software for a small contractor?

For most small shops, QuoteIQ: AI estimating that drafts quotes from a description or photos, flat published plans from $29.99/mo for one user and a 14-day free trial. Jobber, from $49/mo, has the cleanest customer-facing side of the five we ran. Housecall Pro is the pick if online booking drives your work, and Workiz if inbound phone calls do.

How much does field service software cost per month?

The published entry prices on this page are QuoteIQ at $29.99/mo, Jobber at $49/mo and Housecall Pro at $79/mo for a single user. Workiz, FieldPulse and ServiceTitan only quote after a sales call. Multi-user plans and add-ons such as call tracking raise the bill; see our cost guide.

Which tools show a price without a sales call?

QuoteIQ, Jobber and Housecall Pro publish their pricing and let you sign up yourself. Workiz, FieldPulse and ServiceTitan require a demo or sales call before you see a number. We count quote-only pricing against a tool, because a small shop should not need a meeting to learn what software costs.

Is ServiceTitan worth it for a small shop?

Usually not. ServiceTitan's sweet spot is 15 or more techs with office staff to run it, setup takes weeks and pricing is quote only. If you are under that size, QuoteIQ, Jobber or Housecall Pro will do the job for a fraction of the effort. Our Housecall Pro vs ServiceTitan comparison covers the trade-offs.

Does the right tool depend on my trade?

Partly. Crew size decides most of it, but each trade has a wrinkle: emergency dispatch for plumbers, maintenance agreements for HVAC, recurring routes for landscapers, itemised project quotes for electricians. Our trade pages, linked above, cover those differences on top of this ranking.

Not sure which one to pick?

For most small shops our top pick is QuoteIQ — AI estimating, scheduling and invoicing on flat plans from $29.99/mo, with a 14-day free trial.
